A brief history of Great Basin pikas

چکیده

The recent discovery that seven of the 25 historically described populations of American pikas (Ochotona princeps Richardson) in the Great Basin of western North America appear to be extinct (Beever et al., 2003) has added emphasis to earlier warnings that Great Basin populations of this animal are highly vulnerable (McDonald & Brown, 1992). Here, I use archaeological and palaeontological records to stress that these recent losses are part of a Department of Anthropology, University of Washington, Seattle, WA, USA

Influence of Domestic Livestock Grazing on

20 In a pilot study, I observed a relationship between domestic livestock grazing and location of 21 American pika (Ochotona princeps) haypiles in the eastern Sierra Nevada and several Great 22 Basin mountain ranges. Where vegetation communities adjacent to talus bases (forefields) were 23 grazed, mean distance from talus borders to closest fresh haypiles was 30.1 m (SD = 18.9 m, n = 24 27), an...

Distribution and Climatic Relationships of the American Pika (Ochotona princeps) in the Sierra Nevada and Western Great Basin, U.S.A.; Periglacial Landforms as Refugia in Warming Climates

We used a rapid assessment to survey American pika (Ochotona princeps) populations and documented 420 pika site occurrences in southwestern U.S.A. These included 329 sites from the Sierra Nevada (SN), California; 67 from six southwestern Great Basin (swGB) ranges, California and Nevada; 16 from three central Great Basin ranges, Nevada; and 8 from the central Oregon Cascades. Of these, 67% were ...

Understanding relationships among abundance, extirpation, and climate at ecoregional scales.

Recent research on mountain-dwelling species has illustrated changes in species distributional patterns in response to climate change. Abundance of a species will likely provide an earlier warning indicator of change than will occupancy, yet relationships between abundance and climatic factors have received less attention. We tested whether predictors of counts of American pikas (Ochotona princ...

Reconstruction of paleoenvironments of the Great Salt Lake Basin during the late Cenozoic

This study summarizes the results of micropaleontological, sedimentological, and isotope geochemical analyses of cuttings from five deep wells drilled in the Great Salt Lake (Utah, USA). Spanning the last 5.0 million yrs, our environmental history of the Great Salt Lake distinguishes four intervals based on paleobiological and sedimentological characteristics, using a previously developed tephr...
